A Message From 'Pet Costumes Dogs Love' Founder Hank Curtiss

The only thing goofier then a datschund in a hot dog costume is the proud owner who spent the time and money to arrange this special set of circumstances. But that’s the point isn’t? What is your human if he isn’t a loving and unquestioning party to all your worst jokes, bad days…and ideas of questionable merit. I’ve always had a mixed love for costumes- I tend to be a pretty reasonable dog myself,  and yet when Christmas comes around I refuse to be seen with out a pair of fake antlers.

I almost got the yoda costume last year but I refuse to accept that level of dorkieness. (I’m in canine denial) I mean star-wars memorabilia for pets? This is all new territory. I might as well just go and start a dog costume website- oh wait I did.

The obvious question is why? Well I have found costume blogs for dogs, canine costume stores, and a veritable plethora of pulp doggie wisdom drizzled around the internet as if some HTML savvy rat terrier was “marking his territory”. Yet when I went to choose a costume last Halloween for a party I quickly realized that there was nowhere for me to just get my nose wet, sniff around a little bit make my descision before I went bounding off to the nearest shopping cart.

So I thought about it…and I made a few phone calls to some key canines, rolled it around over a couple afternoon car chases and decided to take action. I mean lets face it- it’s a man eat man world out there and If I don’t seize the bone that dog staring back at me in the mirror will…

Time to Take Dog Costume Action...

So there was no bones about it- I had to make this happen, and if it took chewing a few sneakers, doing some “leg work” and barking at the door in the middle of the night- well a dogs gotta do what a dogs gotta do.  After some intensive “lobbying” My human finally came around, helped me with the programming and got this show on the road.

Humans are funny, I stared at him for two weeks straight with the same dumb look on my face every time he got on the computer- and he didn’t get it! Finally one day I just said screw it, and drug all my old costumes out of the closet and tore them to shreds while he was at work. (polyester is disgusting- I don’t care who you are) and then I took my old dog inmate costume hat and set it carefully on his keyboard. I’ve always known he wasn’t the brightest puppy in the litter but if he didn’t get this one I don’t know what I would of done. Well he did thank god and we were able to successfully launch our joint venture: pet costumes dogs love.

I guess I better tell you a little about the site- it’s pretty new and theres much more to come but right now we have some articles, a picture gallery, great dog costume store links and our own dog costume amazon store. Right now I’m working on a section where you can do a search or browse places ot get costumes by category. Oh and I almost forgot, further down on this page there is a sizing diagram and chart.

Also we welcome pictures of fellow dogs in costume. Get your human to take a sec and get a picture of you in your favorite duds, send it in and I will enter you in our pooch of the month contest where you can win all sorts of cool discounts and prizes. I really hope you can participate- don’t be shy!

Until next time- may the toilet water be clear and the cats be slow my friends!

Finding Pet Costumes Dogs Love

The only thing more adorable then your dog is your dog in a goofy costume. But not every costume is ideal for every dog. (A hot dog costume is far better appreciated on a chiwauqua or weiner dog then a great dane or mastiff.) and appearance isn't everything. Personality is a big part of it. For instance, say your dog is especially curious, maybe he/she would make a great doggie detective. Playful puppy? perhaps were talking about the next canine clown.

This site is all about choosing pet costumes dogs love- in other words a costume that will fit your doggies unique personality. We have scoured the world to find the best resources for all of your doggie duds...

Now that much said, one of the first practical (yes I just used the word practical in reference to dog clothing) tasks you will face is obtaining the size measurements for your dog. That's why down further in the page we have included a basic diagram for taking your dogs measurements (This dog size chart can be found at MyPetApparel.com along with great doggie clothes) Note that the chest measurement is the most important. In most cases (except with weiner dogs) if you just get the chest measurement the others should just sort of fall into place. :)

E-Mail us a picture of your pet...
And our doggie duds specialist will find just the right "look" to compliment your canine! or send a picture of your pet in costume for our pooch of the month pet picture and the winner will recieve their next costume absolutly free!

Home Made Dog Costumes: Bad To The Bone!

pet costumes puppy Here's some homeade ideas you can whip up on the fly!

Are you ready to start the party and forgot just one little thing - to dress up your pooch, so that he can enjoy and have fun, too?! Here is a quick and easy last-minute dog costume idea!

Please think safety when dressing up your dog in homemade pet costumes. The costume should fit neither too tight, so your dog's movements are not confined, nor too loose, so he does not trip over the costume. Not all dogs are fine with wearing a costume, so if your dog does not like it, take off the costume immediately.

This is the easiest homemade dog costume possible, because all you need is:

  • a T-Shirt that you are willing to sacrifice for your dog (for a smaller dog you may use your child's T-shirt);
  • a needle and a thread;
  • a few safety pins for tailoring;
  • scissors;
  • your dog.

Time required: 15 minutes (excluding time required for choosing the T-shirt).

Instructions on how to make dog costume:

The front of the T-shirt goes on the dog's back, so choose the shirt and decorations on it accordingly.

The easiest way to tailor the shirt is to have your dog standing up right and to put the shirt on the dog. Front paws go through the sleeves and decorations go on the dog's back. It is likely that your shirt would be too large on your dog, so note any excessive parts and pin them down. You will cut them off later. Leave some space at the bottom of the shirt so your dog can relieve himself and not dirty the costume.

Take off the shirt (after you've pinned excessive parts, the shirt should still come off easily). Adjust safety pins as necessary and cut off excessive fabric. Turn your shirt and hand-sew the two parts together. You can even use sewing machine, if you like. Turn back. Your one of homemade pet costumes is ready and now you can get the party started!
